5 Things to Know Today

Halloween is almost here: Submit your kids' costume pictures to Patch for a chance to win.

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Wednesday, October 26, 2011. We are two days from Trick-or-Treat night, four days from the and five days from the real Halloween.

  1. With the spooky season in mind, we take this opportunity to remind you of the contest. Submit a picture of your little pumpkin dressed up for Halloween. The 10 best costumes in the country, as judged by a panel led by celebrity supermodel Heidi Klum, will win $1,031 each for a local charity of their choice. The grand-prize winner also gets a trip to New York or Los Angeles and a meet-and-greet with Heidi. Clickfor more details.
  2. City Council’s Special Committee on Rules meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Mayor’s Conference Room on the second floor of . The committee, comprised of Chairwoman Karen Dolan and Councilmen Eric Evans and Gordon Mowrer, will discuss current council procedural rules and potential revisions.
  3. The city Zoning Hearing Board meets at 7 p.m. tonight in Town Hall. Three items are on the agenda, most notably a request for a dimensional variance by the Housing Development Corp. to build a 36-unit workforce-affordable housing project at the shuttered St. Stanislaus Church property at 419-429 Hayes St. The rectory would be demolished to make way for the apartments while the church building itself would be retained as a community and resident meeting space.
  4. Once again, it is from 5 to 11 p.m. During this time the sports bar and restaurant presents a special menu of ethnic Hungarian specialties including beef goulash, chicken paprikash, stuffed peppers, dobrosh torte, strudel, kiffles and more. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the South Bethlehem Historical Society’s education and preservation programming.
  5. It’sat as the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild puts on a night of scary ghost stories that are great for the season. The show at the venerable South Bethlehem coffee house, 7 E. Fourth St., starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5.50 or free for children under age 5.
