5 Things to Know Today

Baseball playoffs start, Oktoberfest at SteelStacks continues and it's Week 5 on the gridiron.

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Friday, September 30, 2011. Here comes the weekend.

  1. Get your low-cost flu shot, courtesy of the , at the Rooney Senior Citizens Center, 4 E. Fourth St., from 9 to 11 a.m. are $10 for all city residents and children who attend schools in the Bethlehem Area School District. Shots are free for some Medicare Part B patients.
  2. As TBS prepares to televise as many as 20 Major League Baseball playoff games in the next week, we recognize that the first televised World Series game was played on this day in 1947. That year, the Fall Classic pitted Joe DiMaggio’s New York Yankees against Jackie Robinson’s Brooklyn Dodgers. The golden age of baseball thus was born. The Tampa Bay Rays and the Texas Rangers are the first game of this year’s postseason. Airtime is 5 p.m.
  3. at continues today, starting at noon. The authentic German-style autumn harvest festival has food, fun, music, games and lots and lots of beer. The party goes on until past midnight tonight. Single day admission is $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
  4. Legendary country music band Asleep at the Wheel takes the stage at the starting at 7:30 p.m. The much-acclaimed band has won nine Grammy awards in its illustrious 40-plus year career. Tickets at $44 and $34 are still available and come with a free admission to Oktoberfest downstairs.
  5. On the high school gridiron, the undefeated Patriots try to stay perfect tonight at the stadium against the winless Dieruff Huskies at 7 p.m. In other action tonight, the 2-2 Hurricanes visit the 3-1 Parkland Trojans, while the Crusaders, still looking for their first win, host the 3-1 Northwestern Lehigh Tigers. Golden Hawks won’t play until 1 p.m. Saturday when they host the Emmaus Hornets at the stadium in a battle of two 3-1 teams.
