5 Things to Know Today

If you can't wait to start 'festing, you don't really have to -- preview night is tonight.

Good morning, Bethlehem. Today is Thursday, August 4, 2011. We are now 36 hours from the start of Musikfest.

  1. President Barack Obama turns 50 years old today. Those sharing a birthday with the president include former American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox, who is scheduled to play a at Stabler Arena on Sept. 10; actor Daniel Dae Kim, a alumnus best known for his roles on Lost and Hawaii Five-0; and Dallas Green, who managed the Philadelphia Phillies to their first-ever world championship in 1980, and then, as general manager of the Chicago Cubs, picked apart a Phillies farm system he knew well with a series of trades with his former club, including one that brought future Hall-of-Fame second basemen and current to the Windy City.

Packer Ave., which is what Candi Staurinos, the center’s director of advertising and public relations, suggests if you really want tickets for some of the more popular shows – like Tony Bennett, for example.
  5. If you just can’t wait even one more night for the start of Musikfest, go to Musikfest Preview Night at the campus. There will be two live musical performances at the Air Products Town Square – one at 6 p.m. and another at 9 p.m. At 7:30, Texas blues guitar virtuoso Smokin’ Joe Kubek and singer B’Nois King burn up the Levitt Pavilion stage. The shows are free. At 9 p.m., ArtsQuest officially unveils “The Bridge,” a 68-foot long steel and fire sculpture by artist Elena Colombo at the Town Square. It will be lit no less than three times a night for the duration of the festival.
