5 Things to Know Today

It will be a good day for a wake at Granny McCarthy's and the Sun Inn Courtyard.

Good morning, Bethlehem. Today is Thursday, July 14, 2011, Bastille Day, the 221st anniversary of the modern French Republic. A votre santé, mes amis.

  1. Born on this day, 99 years ago in Okemah, Oklahoma, was Woody Guthrie, one of the greatest of the American songwriters, whose songs left an imprint on a wide array of those who followed, including Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Strummer and Billy Bragg. As Dylan called him his hero, Guthrie, who penned “This Land is Your Land,” might be considered the father of modern folk music.
  2. Brush cutting along Route 22 through Northampton County continues today along east and westbound lanes during the day. There may be lane restrictions. South Bethlehem roadside plant maintenance shifts to Shimersville Road, bringing lane restrictions with flagging. Road drainage maintenance will create similar issues along Wyandotte Street from Broadway to Fountain Hill. The project at the south side of the Hill-to-Hill Bridge and the nighttime improvement project along Route 33 continue.
  3. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about the SteelStacks Farmers Market, but the Farmers Market at Campus Square – at New and Morton streets in South Bethlehem – lives on every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., including today. Among the vendors appearing: Key Ingredient Market (spreads and dips), York Moor Farm (fresh eggs and produce) and Around the World in 80 Cakes, Easton Salsa Co., The Popcorn Pit, A Natural Alternative (soaps and toiletries), , Humdinger Alpacas (wool products), Tasty Pastry, Lettuce Alone Farm (produce), Bechdolt Orchards (produce) and The Flour Shop Bakery.
  4. The Bethlehem Planning Commission meets at 4 p.m. today at Town Hall. A proposed 1.35 million square foot warehouse along Commerce Center Boulevard is one of four items on the agenda. So is a 22-unit condominium development at 1801 Elliot Ave. and nine-unit townhouse development at 1201 Eaton Ave.
  5. The Movies By Moonlight series continues tonight at the with Waking Ned Devine, a cool little comedy about a small Irish village that tries to con the national lottery into thinking the recently deceased winner (killed by the shock of holding the winning ticket) is still alive so they can share the prize. The party starts at 6 p.m. with an almost real wake at on Walnut Street. Ned’s chicken dinner and Annie’s apple tarts – key ingredients in the movie – are on the menu. Make the “corpse” in the coffin laugh and be entered into a lottery to win a prize – Pennsylvania Lottery tickets and a copy of the movie. The movie starts at about 9 p.m.
