5 Things to Know Today

106 years ago today, Albert Einstein showed us his genius.

Good morning, Bethlehem.

  1. Today is Thursday, June 30, 2011, 178 days until Christmas in the Christmas City. On this day in 1905, Albert Einstein published a scholarly paper titled, “On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies,” which first established Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity. In the paper, Einstein postulated that light travels at a constant speed, but time moves at a speed relative to the observer in space, a principle to which anyone who has sat through a meeting can attest. This paper is one of four, known collectively as his “Annus Mirabilis” (Miracle Year) papers, that upended the world of physics, led directly to uncovering many of the mysteries of the atom and made Einstein’s name synonymous with the word “genius.”
  2. The National Weather Service says we are in for another splendid day today, with sunny skies and a high of 82 degrees. Enjoy it if you can because the heat and humidity will show up for the holiday weekend.
  3. Contractors are scheduled to repave Route 412 at Cherry Lane where the city meets the borough of Hellertown, beginning at 7 a.m. and going until 5 p.m. This apparently has something to do with work being done by the gas utility UGI. There will be flaggers and lane restrictions. Give yourself extra time if you plan to roll through that area sometime today or Friday.
  4. This is still in Bethlehem. And it will be for another two days after today.
  5. You can test your pop culture, film and music knowledge at 7:30 p.m. during SmartsQuest at the Creativity Commons on the first floor of the . It’s free and there will be prizes for the pop culture geniuses among us.
