5 Things to Know Today

On this day 14 years ago, Mike Tyson took a bite out of his opponent -- literally.

  1. Today is Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Happy Birthday filmmaker and comedian Mel Brooks, NFL Hall of Famer John Elway, actor John Cusack and CIA Director Leon Panetta (Hey, I know he’s reading this.) On this day in 1846, Belgian musician and instrument maker Adolphe Sax patented the saxophone, without which neither jazz nor rhythm & blues would sound the same. On this day in 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo, precipitating a series of events that led to the start of World War I, and inspiring the name of a Scottish rock band. On this day in 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, officially ending World War I, while laying the groundwork, in the ensuing German resentment, for the outbreak of World War II. On this day in 1969, a routine (for its time) police raid of a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York, precipitated a two-day riot from patrons and the surrounding neighborhood. The so-called Stonewall Riot was the touchstone event that launched the gay rights movement in New York and around the world. On this day in 1997, Mike Tyson was disqualified from his heavyweight title fight with Evander Holyfield after he bit off a piece of the champion’s ear.
  2. The cheapest gas in Bethlehem today can be had at the at Schoenersville and Stoke Park roads, the Petroplus at Eighth Avenue and Broad Street and the on Route 512 near Gateway Drive. All are charging $3.47, but even if these stations aren’t on your normal route, there should be no reason to pay more than $3.49 a gallon anywhere else.
  3. It is . Go to one of more than two-dozen participating restaurants in and near the city and get a full lunch or dinner at a prix fixe price of $30 or less. In some cases, lunch runs as little as $10.
  4. The makes its weekly appearance at PNC Plaza, starting at 3 p.m. Fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables; locally produced meats, cheeses, baked goods and other delicacies will all be available from some 30 merchants set up on the plaza. Making it even sweeter, the roots rock and blues duo of Steve Brosky and Jimmy Meyer provide the live tunes at 3:30 and again at 5:30. Brosky & Meyer stick around for another free evening performance across the street at the Air Products Town Square, starting at 7:30 p.m.
  5. City Council’s Community Development Committee meets at 7 p.m. in Town Hall to discuss the city’s plans to protect outside of Bethlehem’s current Historic Districts.
