Swimming lessons start, school board and township commissioners meet.

Good morning, Bethlehem. Welcome to the working week.

  1. Today is June 20, 2011, 187 days until Christmas in the Christmas City. Happy 69th birthday to Brian Wilson, the early leader and chief songwriter of the Beach Boys.  Wilson is responsible for writing many of the songs that are a part of the rock n’ roll firmament including “Surfin’ USA,” “In My Room,” “California Girls,”  “I Get Around,” and “Good Vibrations.” Also celebrating birthdays today: actors Martin Landau, Olympia Dukakis, John Mahoney, John Goodman and Nicole Kidman.
  2. Brodhead Avenue in South Bethlehem should be reopened to traffic early this morning after it was closed for road reconstruction over the weekend. Otherwise, the area around the southern end of the Hill-to-Hill Bridge will still be slow going. Applebutter Road will be the site of pothole patching for much of the week. Expect delays there.
  3. The cheapest gas in Bethlehem was $3.55 a gallon at the Petroplus gas station at Eighth Avenue and W. Broad Street. However, plenty of other stations around town are charging a mere two cents more. So there is no reason to pay any more than $3.57 a gallon.
  4. While the city’s municipal swimming pools have been open for a little more than a week, today is the first day that swimming lessons are available at the . Lessons for pre-schoolers, children 6 and older and even adults are available. The fee is listed at $55. Call the city’s Parks and Recreation Department at 610-865-7081 for more information.
