5 Things to Know Today

City Council's final vote on Human Relations law is due tonight.

  1. Today is Tuesday, June 7, 2011, graduation day for the seniors at . Congratulations! Ceremony is at 7 p.m. at Stabler Arena. Baseball trivia time: When Mike Schmidt became the Phillies regular third-baseman in 1973, who did he replace? Hint: It is the same guy who was replaced by Larry Bowa when he became the Phillies regular shortstop in 1970. The answer is Don Money, who turns 64 years old today. Money, who joined the Phillies organization in a 1967 trade that sent Jim Bunning to the Pirates, became the Phils’ regular shortstop in 1969. When Bowa arrived, they moved Money to third. When Schmidt arrived, they moved Money again – to Milwaukee as part of a trade that brought Jim Lonborg to Philadelphia. Money went on to have a good career with the Brewers, four times becoming an American League All Star. These days, he manages the Nashville Sounds of the Pacific Coast League, the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate.
  2. The city’s Department of Water Resources will continue a program of hydrant flushing in the area bordered by Johnston Drive, East Boulevard, Butztown Road and Cornwall Road. Crews will be opening the hydrants to flush out any accumulated sediments, lubricate hydrants, and identify any needed repairs. Residents in this neighborhood may notice discoloration of water, low pressure, and/or cloudiness of their water. These problems should last only a short period of time.
  3. Pothole patching continues along Freemansburg Road between Willow Park Road and Butler Street. There will be closed lanes and delays. Installation of highway reflectors along Routes 22 and 33 could also create some traffic delays, as can the continuing construction at the south end of the Hill-to-Hill Bridge.
  4. The returns today from 3 to 7 p.m. at PNC Plaza to the west of the old blast furnace. Eligible senior citizens may want to stop first at the Fountain Hill Senior Citizens Center, 1101 Seneca St., from 2 to 3:30 p.m. when the Lehigh County Office of Aging and Adult Services is scheduled to distribute Farmers Market Vouchers.
