5 Things to Know Today

The pivotal battle of World War II began 67 years ago today.

Good morning, Bethlehem.

  1. Today is Monday, June 6, 2011, D-Day, the 67th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy Beach by American, British and Canadian forces, the largest sea-to-land military operation in human history. The pivotal battle of World War II started the liberation of France from Nazi Germany and began to turn the tide of war toward the Allies. About 175,000 soldiers landed along a 50-mile stretch of French coastline. At Omaha Beach, 5,000 American soldiers were killed or wounded, as they fought through heavily fortified German defenses to secure a beachhead. World War II veterans are a vanishing group. If you know one, today would be a good day to say hello and thank you.

  3. If you are driving along northbound Route 33 today, you may find some lane restrictions as maintenance crews patch potholes between William Penn Highway and Route 22. Patching is also planned along Freemansburg Avenue between Willow Park Road and Butler Street. There will be flagmen out to control traffic through areas reduced to one lane. Reflector installation will be taking place along Routes 22 and 33 today, which PennDOT says will cause shoulder restrictions on Route 33 and ramp restrictions on Route 22. Don’t forget that the construction continues at the southern end of the Hill-to-Hill Bridge.
