5 Things to Know Today

"The Soundtrack Comes Alive" at SteelStacks for First Friday.

Good morning, Bethlehem. Here comes the weekend.

  1. Today is Friday, June 3, 2011, the of the month. And that always means a party in South Bethlehem. Tonight’s theme is BBQ, which means food samples will abound at all the participating South Side businesses. Things get started at 6 p.m.
  2. Pothole patching is planned today for Route 412 between Silvex Road and Williams Street. Expect lane restrictions and delays if you drive through that area.
  3. On this day in 1888, the San Francisco Examiner published “Casey at the Bat,” an epic poem by Ernest Lawrence Thayer about the ignominious defeat of a fictional baseball team – the Mudville Nine – when its star player struck out to end the game. On this day in 1942, twice-elected Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame musician Curtis Mayfield was born in Chicago. It was Mayfield’s songwriting and distinctive falsetto voice that helped propel The Impressions to popularity in the early 1960s with songs like “Keep on Pushing,” “People Get Ready,” and “It’s All Right.” In the 1970s, he became known as a solo artist with the album “Super Fly,” which was released as a soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name, but was far more successful and critically acclaimed.
  4. hosts Peter Karp and Sue Foley, a pair of well-regarded, veteran solo musicians who have joined forces to create the critically acclaimed “He Said, She Said,” an album of 14 songs based on letters the two exchanged over a two-year period. Karp is a songwriting troubadour who is compared to John Hiatt and John Prine. Foley is a popular roots and blues singer/guitar player who has been honing her craft and songwriting skills for more than 20 years. Critics have compared the duo to previous successful pairings of seemingly unlikely couples, including Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris, and Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20.50 at the door.
  5. The Frank Banko Alehouse Cinema at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks tonight hosts a first-of-its-kind performance for these parts, a melding of film and live music called “The Soundtrack Comes Alive.” The movie is “Point Break,” the 1991 film starring the late, great Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves and Gary Busey. The band is The Great White Caps, which bills itself as “surf music from Dutch Country.” The show starts at 10 p.m. Tickets are $13 or $10 for ArtsQuest members.
