Good morning, Bethlehem Nerds!

  1. Today is Wednesday, May 25, 2011. It is Geek Pride Day, a relatively new “holiday” that celebrates nerds, dorks and general geekiness. According to Wikipedia, it is not a coincidence that this falls on the anniversary date of the release of Star Wars in 1977. We here at Patch will be celebrating with some special geek-oriented content that we hope all you nerds will enjoy. In the meantime, plan to do something geeky today. Go to a store; watch a science fiction movie; rearrange your action figure collection. Just don’t forget your pocket protector. Or your towel.
  2. Speaking of geeky but utterly great endeavors, today is the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s speech to a joint session of Congress in which he announced that he would initiate a program to land a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s. The Apollo program was born, and on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin lived up to Kennedy’s ambitious plan.
  3. Students and alumni of Lehigh Carbon Community College in Schnecksville are planning to rally today in front of the administration building to of the college radio station, WXLV, 90.3 FM.
  4. Luis Alberto Montero, accused of at her South Bethlehem home on May 10, is scheduled to appear before for his preliminary hearing today at 1 p.m.
  5. If you drive Route 22 during the evening and overnight hours, watch out for lane restrictions in each direction. A PennDOT-hired contractor is scheduled to install raised pavement markers along the highway’s stretch during the overnight hours all week long from the Lehigh County line to the New Jersey state line.
