5 Things to Know Today

An election roundup; another soggy day; City Council meets tonight; last chance for fish heads.

Good Wednesday morning, Bethlehem.

  1. If you couldn’t stay up late to follow the primary election returns last night, we’ve got you covered. To sum up, Northampton County voters decided that ; Lehigh County Republicans decided that; Bethlehem Township Republicans decided to for Martin Zawarski; and about the Bethlehem Area School Board.
  2. A flood watch for Bethlehem and pretty much all of the Lehigh Valley today. The National Weather Service forecast says the slow moving storm is expected to be moving off the Carolina coast and to the northwest today, bringing us periods of heavy rain, perhaps thunderstorms, gusty winds and as much as another inch-and-a-half of rain.
  3. The Theis-Cornfeld Yard Waste Facility on Schoenersville Road remains closed for renovations. It is expected to reopen Friday.
  4. City Council meets tonight, starting with a Finance Committee meeting at 6 p.m. The regular meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Council is expected to have the first official reading and vote on a new that would create a Human Relations Commission to deal with discrimination complaints and extend equal protection to gays, lesbians and transgendered people. Council also plans to vote on a somewhat controversial decision to eliminate a left-turn lane from southbound Wyandotte Street into the in South Bethlehem. The fast food franchise has threatened to sue the city over the decision, claiming it will curtail its business.
  5. New Orleans rock n’ roll greats The Radiators visit the Musikfest Café at SteelStacks at 7:30 p.m. The band is on its “Last Roundup” tour, marking the end of a legendary 33-year career. The band has only scheduled nine more shows on the tour before they call it quits next month. Get your “fish head music” while you still can.
