5 Things to Know Today

Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Steelworkers Archives at the Fowler Family SouthSide Center.

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Friday, November 4, 2011. By midnight, the number of households without electricity in the city was down to two – and less than 500 Valleywide. It’s almost Miller Time for all those PPL employees. Here comes the weekend.

  1. Today will be the last day to get your morning cup of coffee on PPL’s dime at participating Subway restaurants. Visit the Subways at , ., and to get your free java between 7 and 9 a.m.
  2. The Bethlehem Compost Center, 1480 Schoenersville Road, reopens this morning at 9 a.m. and will stay open for extended hours through 5 p.m. to help city residents get rid of tree branches and other vegetative debris left from last weekend’s snowstorm. The center will be open through the weekend for those same hours. Also, the Theis/Cornfeld Recycling Center, 635 Illick’s Mill Road, will continue to accept yard waste for one more day, today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In Bethlehem Township, the recycling center on Falmer Drive will also be open for extended hours – from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – to allow for the dumping of yard waste.
  3. Celebrate the with a day of events at starting at 10 a.m. There will be lectures on Bethlehem Steel, panel discussions with retired steelworkers, tours led by steelworkers and a host of other activities. The celebration runs through 8 p.m.
  4. Get your flu shot today for $10 at the ’s office in City Hall from 1 to 3 p.m. Anyone who lives in Bethlehem is eligible to get the shot for that cost.
  5. It’s “Fancy Friday,” for the monthly First Friday celebration in South Bethlehem. Visit a vendor indie mart at the corner of Third and New streets and enjoy food samples. Each business will host samples of select samples of fancy food, live music and wine samples. It all gets under way at 6 p.m.
