5 Things to Know Today

Allentown Fairgrounds hosts a regional job fair; city students make pinwheels for peace.

Good morning Bethlehem. Today is Wednesday, September 21, 2011. We are 94 days from Christmas in the Christmas City.

  1. On this day in 1897, The New York Sun published a letter from an 8-year-old girl and an editorial response under the headline Is there a Santa Claus? The letter by Virginia O’Hanlon and the response, by Francis Pharcellus Church, Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, remains the most reprinted editorial to run in any newspaper in the English language. It has provided the inspiration for books, television specials and endures as a piece of American holiday season folklore.
  2. PennDOT bridge inspections along Route 22 at Route 191 and Route 512 will cause eastbound lane restrictions on Route 22. A shoulder-widening project along Applebutter Road will also cause lane restrictions and delays.
  3. Representatives of dozens of companies and agencies will be at Agricultural Hall in the Allentown Fairgrounds for the Raymond E. Spencer Memorial Job Fair. Dress to impress, bring copies of your resume and a pen to fill out job applications. The fair, which will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will also feature a number of workshops for job seekers.
  4. Today is the International Day of Peace, which will be marked at and elementary schools with handmade pinwheels from the pupils at the two schools.
  5. It’s Makeover Night at Stacks in the City, the weekly Ladies’ Night at the starting at 6 p.m. The ArtsQuest website is describing it as “a night of cocktails, makeovers and shopping at, , and My Sister's Closet.”
