HISTORIC HOTEL BETHLEHEM CELEBRATES TWO OF ITS FAMOUS FORMER GUESTS IN APRIL

Former hotel guests Amelia Earhart and Sir Winston Churchill will be honored April 15 and April 22, respectively, with themed evenings in The Tap Room at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem.

Earhart’s visit to the hotel took place in September 1929 as a guest speaker for Bethlehem’s Rotary Club. She flew into town in her bright red Lockheed Vega monoplane (now on display at the Smithsonian Institute) arriving at Bethlehem’s Municipal Airport.

On her transatlantic flight, it is reported that she spoke of taking a chicken sandwich with her in the very crude cockpit of the era. For the April 15 Earhart themed menu the hotel’s chefs are improving on her humble sandwich by serving a chicken salad croissant made with grapes, walnuts, celery and peppers.

For dessert, Earhart’s favorite cheesecake will be served as a cheesecake trio of coconut, vanilla and violet. The evening’s signature cocktail will be “The Aviator,” using Crème de Violette, made by Austrian liqueur maker, Rothman & Winter. The liqueur is produced from a maceration of violets from the Austrian Alps and imparts a delicate floral nose and taste along with a violet color.

Sir Winston Churchill visited the Historic Hotel Bethlehem in 1929 at the invitation of Charles M. Schwab, president of Bethlehem Steel, while touring Schwab’s steel plant. The Churchill themed menu on April 22 will include traditional fish and chips (batter-dipped haddock with chips, served with salt and malt vinegar) and rum raisin toffee bread pudding for dessert. The featured drink will be a Scotch flight of three samples of Churchill’s favorite beverage.

Costumed actors portraying Earhart and Churchill will mingle with guests. The themed menus will be available in The Tap Room from 5 – 10 p.m. on their respective dates. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 610-625-2219 or by emailing reservations@hotelbethlehem.com.
