Opening your own business is a brave move. It takes determination, strength, and a driving passion. Now in Bethlehem Patch, we will feature a regular column on new retail and service businesses that have opened or will be opening in the city.
A new veterinary hospital will open in Bethlehem in June. Christmas City Veterinary Hospital will be located at 1003 W. Broad St.
Owner and veterinarian Dr. Lisa Cawley attended Lehigh University and the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, and has worked at Saucon Valley Animal Hospital and Thoreau Veterinary Hospital.
Cawley was interested in a practice that would exude a neighborhood appeal. Cawley’s patients (and their parents) will be able to walk to the location. Cawley stresses a personal touch to handling patients. For the time being, Cawley will be the only attending Vet, thus allowing each animal to be seen by the same doctor each visit, putting them at ease.
Christmas City Veterinary Hospital will see dogs and cats as well as “pocket pets” such as rabbits, mice, ferrets and guinea pigs. The practice will be open five days a week, including two evenings and select Saturdays.
Artsy Diva Boutique
With an eye for talent and an interest in local art, Carmen LoBaido opened Artsy Diva Boutique on 458 Main Street in early April. The boutique specializes in handcrafted art objects in a variety of mediums. Lobaido, a lifelong artist, and a member of the Bethlehem Palette Club, wants to expose customers to handcrafted objects made by members of their community.
The boutique features a wide range of objects including traditional paintings, jewelry, pottery, glassware, and woven baskets all made by local artists. LoBaido places an emphasis on handcrafted objects indicating that an artist places “part of themselves in it,” allowing appreciation for a unique object.
To further a customer’s experience, future classes will be offered to the public taught by artists, as well as art talks, and demonstrations.
The Plaza Bistro restaurant at 1 West Broad Street, in the Bank of America building’s first floor, has been open since February. Owner Cyle Quain, who has a culinary degree from Johnson and Wales and a background in restaurant management and business, brings casual sophistication to mid-day dining.
A revolving menu, which changes with the seasons, includes popular choices such as the Caprese Melt and the Cobb Salad, as well as daily specials with fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood.
Each menu choice is prepared with fresh ingredients, local when possible, and is made to order. Guests can dine in with wait service or use take out service, both with an emphasis placed on preparing food in a timely manner.
The location can be used for any type of special functions with accommodations made for theme. With the summer approaching, the Plaza Bistro will feature outdoor seating, and increased hours. Current hours are 10-4PM, Monday-Friday, and 11-3PM Saturday.
