Patch Picks: 5 Things You Should Bring to Musikfest

Plus, 5 things you shouldn't ...

One of the wonderful things about any music festival is the opportunity to put your everyday cares aside and just enjoy the groove. But key to being able to do that is having the right stuff with you, and leaving the things that won't enhance your day safely at home.

You don't need a lot — after all, Musikfest happens in the middle of urban Bethlehem. A few useful items and bits of information will ensure all you'll need to worry about is what great thing you'll see next, in between seeking out your favorite 'fest foodie bits.

To bring:

  1. Dress for the day. A shirt and shoes are required on Musikfest grounds. But beyond the rules, think ahead for your comfort over the course of the whole day. Ultra-hot summer afternoons give way to much cooler evenings — wearing clothes that are versatile or layered is a good idea.

  2. A hat to provide a bit of portable shade from the sun doesn't hurt either. Bringing along some sunscreen is a good idea too—those UV rays can sneak up, even on cloudy days. With 10 days to enjoy, you definitely don't want the pain of a sunburn to get in the way. Sunglasses are a nice thing to have too.

  • A comfortable shoulder bag or backpack. It may seem a little larger than what you need, but you'll have everything in one place, and room for everything with an easy way to carry it, hands free. You'll be even gladder you decided to bring it after you've made an impromptu purchase or two.

  • A rain poncho. You could bring one of those tiny collapsible umbrellas too, but a poncho is a wonderful thing to have on hand if the weather turns unexpectedly. (It won't be Musikfest if that doesn't happen at least once.) They're sold on site, but you'll save some bucks if you stock up on a few at the dollar store before you go.

  • Anything you'd normally need over the course of a full day. Don't forget prescribed medications, extra baby supplies, etc. You may find yourself having such a great time that you're reluctant to leave when you thought you would. Making sure you've got the things you need to get through a normal day on hand will allow you the freedom to stay for one more set.

  • Things to leave at home:

    1. Pets, other than designated service dogs. Besides the fact that bringing animals is against the 'fest rules, Musikfest is huge, crowded and designed for people to have a good time, not Fido. Man's best friend and any other beastly buddies will be much happier at home, enjoying their kibbles away from the noise and confusion.

    2. Bicycles, skateboards and scooters. Again, these are not allowed at Musikfest, though nothing says you can't bike to the festival's edge and park it.

    3. Weapons of any kind or fireworks. We don't know why you'd need these things, but if you're thinking you do, think again. We'd rather not have you land in our police reports next week. Thanks.

    4. Laser pointers. Prohibited by 'fest rules. Just as well, they're much better for entertaining your cat than fellow Musikfest-goers anyway.

    5. Outside food and drink, coolers and pitchers. Most of Musikfest is free—they've got to make their money back somehow. So chow down on some great grub, knowing your money not only bought you lunch, but also goes to ensuring next year's 'fest.
