Great Escape: Go Dutch for Mud Season

Lancaster County getaway offers crafts, antiques and wineries

Although mud might not be the best aphrodisiac, if you enjoy exploring the art, antiques, covered bridges and wineries of Lancaster County, this is a great time to take advantage of the Mud Season specials at Adamstown Inn and Cottages.

Mud season marks the early spring months when farmers had some spare time before spring planting. During Mud Season, local volunteer fire companies held auctions to raise money, the tradition of which dates back to the 1960’s. The term “mud sale” is derived from the muddy grounds where the auctions are held.

This Friday, Adamstown hosts First Friday and Saturday is the Bart Township Fire Company’s Annual Mud Auction.

Lancaster County hosts thousands of people looking for bargains, rare finds, and the unique craftsmanship of the Amish at these mud sales. Each sale has different items, but typically auctions include furniture, craft items, quilts, building materials, livestock, buggies and carriages, tools, farming supplies and equipment, garden items, groceries, and antiques.
