Get Out: Music, Comedy and Civil War Reenactors

Plus the autism walk, marionettes, football, theater and Record Store Day.

For singles or couples looking for some nightlife, hosts live music with Graham Parker of Friday and Mary Fahl on Saturday.  If you’re not afraid to laugh out loud, though, check out The Comedy Show of Joe Casilio at Sagra on Saturday night. To bring it down a notch, take in The Eighth Order at , a serious play about the challenges of raising children with differences in a small town.

Teachable moments abound in the Lehigh Valley this weekend. Autism Speaks sponsors the , a 5K walk that will help raise awareness for Autism. If history is more your deal, take the kids to the Civil War Encampment in downtown Bethlehem.  It will be like stepping backwards in time to 1861. Concerned more about environmental issues as Earth Day approaches, the Mock Turtle theatre will host and interactive performance and workshop about wildlands conservation.

And, if you are bummed that the Iron Pigs are away this weekend, fear not because the LV Steelhawk’s are in town.  Satisfy your craving for live sports entertainment with the some arena football action against the Chicago Slaughter, sans bacon of course.

Why Go: If you like the Beatles and went wild for the 70’s British Invasion, you want to see Graham Parker on Saturday night.  Mary Fahl’s “voice for the gods” in Saturday’s performance will be a more emotional and expressive brand of folk-pop.  Whichever you choose, the live music at Godfrey Daniel’s is always a winner.

THE EIGHTH ORDER (NORTHAMPTON  COMMUNITY COLLEGE)

Where/When: Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Main Campus, Northampton Community College, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township, Friday & Saturday, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, 3:30 p.m. 

Why Go: Definitely worth the price of a canned good donation. An inspiring story of struggle and survival for a small town single mother, the play examines the realities of being human with truly heart-felt emotion. 

Pricing: Admission is free with a donation of canned goods for a local food bank and/or a minimum $5 donation to the Norman R. Roberts Theatre Scholarship Fund. 610-861-5525.

 

5th ANNUAL LV WALK NOW FOR AUTISM (AUTISM SPEAKS)

Where/When: Lehigh Parkway, Allentown, Saturday 8:30 a.m. registration, walk begins at 10:00 a.m.

Why Go: A great teachable moment for families even if your child is not on the Autism Spectrum.  Be part of something bigger and greater than yourself on a 5K walk to raise awareness and funds for Autism Speak. 

Pricing: There are no fees to walk but, raising $150 or more will get you at T-shirt and over a $1000 will get you into the Grand Club for VIP treatment at the walk.

 

YES I'M GOING FISHIN' (MOCK TURTLE MARIONETTE THEATRE)

Where/When: Charles Brown Ice House, , 56 River Rd, Bethlehem, Saturday 10:00 a.m. – noon.

Why Go: A celebration of Americana in an interactive performance that will have the whole family involved. Charles Kiernon will perform Appalachian tales with wit and wisdom followed by a fold music workshop provided by the Folk Music Society.

Pricing: $5 for the show and story time/$7.50 for the show and workshop combination Sponsors, LV Storytellers, LV Folks Music Society, Wildlands Conservancy

 

RECORD STORE DAY 

Where/When: Compact Disc Center, 1365 Easton Ave., Bethlehem. Saturday, 10 a.m. -- 8 p.m.

Why Go: The third annual national celebration of independent record stores includes special CD and vinyl releases that will only be available that day, free live musical performances by the likes of previously mentioned Graham Parker and Mary Fahl, giveaways and a chance to win a $100 gift certificate.

Pricing: Free to attend.

 

LV STEELHAWKS VS. CHICAGO SLAUGHTER (LV STEELHAWKS)

Where/When: Stabler Arena, 124 Goodman, Bethlehem, Saturday 7:00 p.m.

Why Go: The Iron Pigs are out of town and you still need a sports fix? Check out LV Steelhawks, the LV’s home town arena football team, against the Chicago Slaughter for some family-friendly live sports entertainment.

COMEDY SHOW WITH JOE CASILIO (SAGRA BISTRO)

Why Go: Joe’s brand of observational humor combined with his background in theatre lend towards side-splitting laughter.

BETHLEHEM CIVIL WAR ENCAMPMENT (HISTORIC BETHLEHEM PARTNERSHIP)

Where/When: Colonial Industrial Quarter in Downtown Bethlehem, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  

Why Go: The Civil War is coming up on its 150th anniversary and Bethlehem is bringing this historical moment to life in its Bethlehem Civil War Living History Weekend where your family can experience music, lectures, reenactments and a parade as well as an appearance by President Abraham Lincoln himself.

Pricing: $5 for adults, $3 for children.
