Get Out: Godfrey Daniels Celebrates 35 Years

Plus, arena football, Bach and more St. Patrick's Day shenanigans

35th Anniversary Concert (featuring John Gorka)

Where/When: , 44 E. Market St., Bethlehem; 8 p.m. tonight; doors open at 6:45 p.m. 

Why Go: South Bethlehem’s venerable volunteer-run listening room and coffee house celebrates a landmark anniversary with one of the greatest names in folk music, who just happened to get his start playing open mike nights on Godfrey’s stage 30 years ago. There will be a special dessert buffet by the and a silent raffle of unique items that only Godfrey’s could have collected. Show opener is Godfrey’s founder Dave Fry. Make note of the location, a north side church that will allow for a larger audience.

Pricing: Free, but only for Godfrey Daniels members, making this a good time to join. Single-person, yearlong memberships start at $45 and include other benefits. Couples can join and enjoy the show for $75.

The Allentown St. Patrick’s Parade Eve Pub Crawl 

Where/When: A variety of bars around the West End of Allentown; registration at 6 p.m.; crawl starts at 6:30 p.m.

Why Go: Make your way around eight West End Allentown pubs and bars to meet old friends, make new ones and just mingle and have a good time, all in the good name of St. Patrick, of course. 

Pricing: $15

 

Lehigh Valley Steel Hawks v. Richmond Revolution

Where/When: Stabler Arena, 124 Goodman Drive, Bethlehem; 7 p.m., Saturday.

Why Go: It will be the first-ever home opener of the newest Lehigh Valley professional sports franchise, the Steel Hawks of the Indoor Football League. In the first home game, the Steel Hawks will play the Richmond Revolution, the defending division champions. The franchise is promising fans more than just a football-watching experience, with a dance squad and multiple promotions. The Steel Hawks are encouraging all of their fans to wear black to the first game.

Pricing: $32-$38 a ticket.

 

The 54th Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade 

Where/When: It starts at the Allentown Fairgrounds and winds its way around the streets of the city’s West End; 1-6 p.m., Sunday. 

Why Go: An opportunity to keep celebrating the Emerald Isle for just a wee bit longer. Plus, it’s an opportunity to do some good: the Second Harvest Food Bank will have bins to donate canned food items all along the parade route. Then you can end your day at Jack Callaghan’s Ale House, 2027 Tilghman St., for their contest. Starting at 5 p.m., this competition has men’s and women’s divisions. I need to have a talk with about this idea.

“Songs of Hope” -- The Bach Choir of Bethlehem

Where/When:  , 2344 Center St, Bethlehem; 4 pm, Sunday

Why Go: From the Psalms of David to 18th century poetry by Christopher Smart written in an English lunatic asylum, and 20th century poetry by Carl Sandburg written in depression-era Chicago, the texts Songs of Hope are moving affirmations of hope in the face of adversity in the hands of composers Bach, Britten, Bernstein, and Paulus. And given recent events in Japan; as well as a much , we could all use some.
