Opera, the LU Philharmonic, learn to make beer and get some laughs

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I’ve been told there is love in the air. I thought it was just a stomach virus, but I’m not a doctor.

One thing that is in the air is the weekend, now just a scant 31 hours away for most of you. Not that anyone’s counting.

We’ve got five suggestions of things to do after quitting time tomorrow, whether you’re feeling the love or not.

1. Valentine Dinner Dance

Where/When: , 1770 Meadows Rd, Hellertown, 6:30 p.m., Friday

Why Go: OK, this one isn’t single-person friendly, but it is a nice and relatively inexpensive night out for couples, including dinner, a DJ and Paragon playing your favorite songs until 11 p.m. Cash bar.

Pricing: $50 per couple

2.  Marathon

Where/When: Zoellner Arts Center, 341 E Packer Ave, Bethlehem, Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m.

Why Go: This might be the most underrated orchestra in Pennsylvania. And this time, the price to hear it can’t be beat.
 Director Eugene Albulescu leads student soloists in concerto movements and readings of beloved symphonic standards.

Pricing: Free, no tickets required

3. The Allentown Symphony presents Carmen

Where/When: Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown, Saturday, 8 p.m., Sunday, 3 p.m.

Why Go: High culture for the season of love. The symphony presents what is described as a “semi-staged” version of the world’s most popular opera. This Bizet classic tells the story of the gypsy Carmen and her ill-fated love affair with the jealous Spanish soldier Don Jose.

Pricing: $25, $45, $50 or $60.

4. Wine and Beer Making Seminar

Where/When: Wine and Beermakers Outlet, 202 S 3rd St., Coopersburg, Sunday, 2 p.m.

Why Go: Because you’ve always wanted to try making your own homemade brew. Beer and Wine Master Mike Thom will teach you the some of the basics for a price that can’t be beat.

5. All the Single Ladies 2, improvisational comedy with The Associated Mess

Where/When: Theatre 514, Civic Theatre of Allentown, 514 N. 19th St., Sunday, 8 p.m.

Why Go: If you’re lonely and blue, laughter is the best medicine. The Associated Mess is a Lehigh Valley-based improvisational comedy troupe that has been growing in popularity. In this show, the funny ladies of the group re-enact some of the worst dates you’ve ever had.

Pricing: $8 or $5 with a student ID.
