Westboro Baptist Targets 4 Lehigh Valley Churches

The controversial anti-gay group Westboro Baptist Church says it is planning to protest at four Allentown area churches on January 20

Westboro Baptist Church says it is planning to stage protests at four Lehigh Valley churches including the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena in Allentown on Sunday, according to a press release posted on the group's website.

South Whitehall police Lt. John Christman, aware of the planned Westboro pickets, said, "Often they don't show. We're hoping that occurs."

He and township Manager Jon Hammer met with the pastors at the targeted churches in South Whitehall about the matter on Tuesday.

Do you support the online petition to designate Westboro Baptist a hate group?

If Westboro does picket, authorities will "let them do what they do," he said. "Let them have their protest." However police would need to take appropriate action if they block roadways, he said.

Christman said the police department will likely have extra patrol cars and undercover officers on duty. He said he heard counter protests may be planned.

The press release says the protests will target "whorehouses masquerading as churches" and lists the following times and locations:

  • 8:30 to 9 a.m.: St Paul's Anglican, 2510 Livingston Street
  • 9:05 to 9:30 a.m.: Asbury Church, 1533 Springhouse Road
  • 9:50 to 10 a.m.: Cathedral of St. Catharine, 210 N. 18th Street
  • 10:30 to 11 a.m.: First Baptist Church, 1808 N. 19th Street

First Baptist Church secretary Kim Nemeth said she first learned about the planned protest from police on Tuesday and did research on the group. She said there's "a little ill at ease" because the church officials don't want church-goers to feel inhibited as they come to worship on Sunday.

When asked why First Baptist may have been targeted, Pastor Chuck Reed said, "We're an old Baptist church and I think they assume we're a liberal church."

But, he said, "We're conservative evangelical. We're not liberal at all."

He said Westboro seemed to hit four corners of theology in the churches they are targeting on Sunday -- Baptist, Methodist, Catholic and Anglican.

He said First Baptist Church does not support Westboro's views but is not worried about their visit. "We've been praying for them," Reed said.

"We're a Biblically driven, local evangelical church...and we just love people. We worship God as a community."

Matthew Kerr, spokesman for the Diocese of Allentown, told Patch he's aware of the press release but offered no further comment.

Kansas-based Westboro is an independent Baptist church known for its extreme opposition to homosexuality and its protests at military funerals.

An online petition to classify Westboro as a hate group and revoke its federal tax-exempt status has gained close to 74,000 signatures.

I am the son of a catholic father who never went to church and a protestant mother who took us to church and Sunday school. Onward christian soldiers; I think not. Such absolute drivel. To be manipulated by a santa claus; an easter bunny and worst of all a bogus cross?
Kim January 19, 2013 at 03:28 pm
Get over yourself Grant. You will never get everyone to accept you, just as you don't accept me as a Christian. Big deal...get over it! Not everyone is going to agree with your point of view no matter how ugly and nasty you get. I have a lot of assumptions made about me because I am Catholic and, God forbid, a Republican. I could care less what people think of me when they don't even know me. Obviously you feel shunned by your church. Some of us have wonderful experiences with our churches. I have also had horrible experiences. I am mature to realize that churches are made up of flawed human beings. That doesn't mean the teachings are flawed. I have been lucky enough to have God show His presence to me when I was at my lowest. Why don't you shut the world out for a minute and just try a prayer to God. Let Him know you don't believe, but ask Him to show Himself to you in your life. You might be surprised. Open your heart just a little and make room for God. You might not be filled with so much hate and nastiness.

It is written; so therefore it shall be? We are the chosen people; such a wicked fantasy.
Einstein stated in a letter recently auctioned that the bible was a collection of primitive legends. He said believing in God was childish and he as a Jew is no different than another person and are not chosen by God.
Kim January 19, 2013 at 03:48 pm
My understanding, as a Catholic, is that being homosexual is not a sin. The sin is if you act on it. Even if you do, that is between you and God. Who is to say that it is a worse sin than adultery or any other sin that I commit. Grant, your choices in life are between you and God. God is loving. I am sorry that you have had so much ugliness hurled at you in the name of God, but that doesn't excuse you hurling your ugliness at us. I have had proof of God in my life. I was at the point of wanting my life to end, I cried out to God. Without getting specific, He answered my prayer. The last 4 years have been a struggle, but it's a lot easier with God by my side. God fills me in. I try to live my life as best I can. I fail often, but I know that no matter what, God loves me and is there for me. I feel so blessed to know that. Nothing else or no one else matters. It's all about me and God. It is such a gift. I will pray for you.

Kim -- don't pray/prey for me! Perhaps you; yourself helped yourself get out of your issue! If the pope and Hitler are representative of the Catholic faith -- keep it away from me!

You didn't read my posts with any thought did you. I will pray for you as I'm sure you will continue to be a miserable arrogant ***hole. It your free will....lol...see how Ironic that last line was!

President Obama
The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW Washington, DC, USA 20500 Dear President Obama: The Bible should be banned! Here are several really loving excerpts from the Torah; the first five books of the Old Testament in the bible -- perhaps read to the congregation on Friday night at a synagogue or a Sunday morning church in the meadow. 1. Kill any friends or family that worship a god that is different than your own. Deuteronomy 13:6-10 2. Kill all the inhabitants of any city where you find people that worship differently than you. Deuteronomy 13:12-16 3. Kill everyone who has religious views that are different than your own. Deuteronomy 17:2-7. Rabbinical / Priestly rules: Leviticus 21:17-18 … “No one who is blind or lame or has a defect or any blemish may approach to offer the bread of his God.” Leviticus 18:22 … “You are not to go to bed with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination ….” Rabbis; the pope and churches fully aware that Leviticus 18:22 applies to rabbis and priests … refuse to remove this stigma maliciously persecuting gays. Kids are being bullied into suicide …! Being black, left-handed or being gay is just as natural. It is a sometimes rare occurrence to fall in Love and to hold that person in your heart and be loved in return ... it is something that should be celebrated! If it’s between two guys or two girls -- all the better. It takes even more courage to defend that LOVE ...! www.HolyFaux.com

As I say – religion is like a rat trap – whenever one reaches for any of it with a heart; it will try and crush your mind with hateful head-games that must be adhered to – to become a member of such a hate club! It’s the ultimate pyramid scheme --!
The pope is running a bigger fraud than Madoff’s $50 billion ripoff. The pope should be committed to an asylum -- for the religiously insane!
Rosemary B January 19, 2013 at 08:54 pm
Don't waste your time talking to our dear, lost, angry friend Grant. I personally think he needs to learn to love himself. Though prayer is always the answer. I too know that God is real and I also will pray that He will open Grant's eyes. But talking to him seems to fall on extremely deaf ears.

Religion and the churches should now be exposed as a bigoted structure that gets away with hate mongering. It is a criminal offence to cause harm onto others physically or with written items; torahs – old testament/new testament bibles have been getting away with corruption and cultism based on bogus hocus pocus.

If gay people can’t be accepted with respect and dignity as the natural part of society … perhaps the world should bring back the arenas with the lions … to deal with the hateful -- religious lunatics! Tim Tebow could be one of the first with the pope and Pat Robertson following Fred Phelps – or perhaps the crucifixion thing … does have its merit! Those Romans were pretty smart!

In the year 325 AD … Emperor Constantine -- who to some was the first pope; went on to fabricate & market Christianity with the creative historian Eusebius; at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge; thus allowing christianity to be accepted by the Roman soldiers whom he needed to fight his Milvian battle. Romans previously crucified the christians or threw them to the lions. Emperor Constantine thereafter went to Constantinople/Istanbul to idolize Apollo and himself as a god. Constantine was basically a Pagan idolizing Apollo instead of Jesus! December 25th is the birthday of Mithras who preceded Christ.

What a wonderful day for The Honourable President of the United States of America ... Barrack Obama!
The Republican Party; has self-destructed -- on the grounds of homophobia & religious corruption! Someone left the door of the asylum ajar -- the religious extremists are loose & they are all in the Republican Party! Religion; is the biggest bully on the block!
marc vanic January 21, 2013 at 07:32 pm
Be thankful for the republicans they are the ones payin the bills, lets divide the nation in half, liberals will give the farm away until theres nothing to give ,barrack has the key to the money printing press, so relax it can go on forever

This global financial downturn is all attributable to the one and only; Ben Bernanke … appointed by Bush! He wanted to slow down the buoyant economy while learning on the job -- and it cost the world economy upwards of $6 Trillion. He raised interest rates – week after week after week after week after weak - and watched the meltdown! Hope he learned the meaning of growth.
Grant MacDonald January 21, 2013 at 07:39 pm
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.) seems intent on blocking Obama -- from paying the bills -- Republicans left behind … fighting Israel’s ongoing holy war & land grab. As long as NATO will provide soldiers and the U.S. provides the money … Israel pushes this arrogant “better than thou bull….” People don’t accept this chosen &%@# any longer!
NATO military presence in the West Bank -- sorting the illegal land grab of 1967 & expansion of the illegal settlements -- might resolve the global holy war issue with a bigger bang for the buck dealing the root cause – Israeli arrogance! I look at Emperor Netanyahu; as the big NATO & U.S. tail-wagger & Cantor his butt licker … manipulating the world into trillions of dollars of war debt … cast onto the global taxpayers! Cantor & Grover Norquist should be treated somewhat … like Romania President; Nicolae Ceausescu – a US government approved … hangin!

Try talking about LOVE and compassion towards the gay community to the evil pope and -- gee should we include Fred Phelps & other lunatic religious extremists?

I’m just reflecting how the congregation usually gets dumped on with this religious drivel!

Just pointing out facts. You are also forgetting that money withdrawn from an IRA or 401k (exceptRead More Roth IRAs) are taxed at withdrawal. I prefer my government not punish good financial actions. Sorry it's a quirk of mine, I think we should reward those who make good decisions, not punish them.
Tony Simek May 6, 2013 at 06:35 pm
I agree with you Interested Bystander. Problem is that if you punish the ones making the badRead More decisions, the Federal government will be punished all the time. In the current climate, poor decision making gets rewarded by voters. The middle class doesn't have a chance.

Naziti and Caroline Johnson so sorry to take so long to get back to you from your comments onRead More Sunday, May 5th, I didn't think I would have to respond. I re-posted Ken's comment because the REAL issue is "AARP selling out it's faithful supporters for BIG MONEY. So let me break it down so even the Soros trolls understand. ObamaCare guts SS and medicare reserve money by 750 Billion. Which ends these programs as we know them. AARP publicly backs ObamaCare. Seniors confused about OCare but trust AARP and their massive ad campaign for OCare. AARP contributes to re-election AARP becomes insurance provided for OCare. Unleashes host of insurance options that Seniors will be needing to make decisions about in next 2-3 years. Complicate the choices for Seniors so they fall back on who they have trusted in the past. Still unaware of the great deception perpetrated by AARP. OCARE fully enacted 2014. AARP gets steady $$$ insurance income now (not $16 membership fees for whoever posted that line above). SS and MediCare bankrupt (3/4 trillion $ stolen to fund OCare) Result for SENIORS. NO SS or MEDicare it's dissolved or becomes something less. Free OCare that sucks. Pay AARP for supplemental Ins. Prescriptions too expensive to purchase so go without or pay AARP for better plan. AARP richer and more powerful represents Gvmt Seniors - Self rule lost You see they screwed the very people that paid dues for their protection!
