Columbus Day Weekend at Hawk Mountain

Hawk Mountain near Kempton is a popular spot on Columbus Day weekend.

Casual hikers and serious bird watchers filled the lookout points at Hawk Mountain on Sunday as they enjoyed a perfect combination of gorgeous autumn weather and high season for hawk migration.

People used to swarm to the mountain to shoot hawks before New York socialite and conservationist Rosalie Edge leased 1,400 acres and hired a warden to patrol the land and stop the slaughter in 1938.

The Hawk Mountain Sanctuary now spans 2,600 acres in Berks and Schuylkill counties and features a trail system that's only a few miles from the Appalachian Trail. The sanctuary is near Kempton, about 35 miles west of Allentown.
