Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Fowler Youth Center

Youth boxing and traditional Mexican dance on display in South Bethlehem.

A throng of people gathered at the Fowler Youth Center in South Bethlehem to mark Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican civic holiday that celebrates Mexico's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. It is not, as youth center director Aurea Ortiz pointed out, Mexican Independence Day but it is an important holiday of national pride, nonetheless.

To mark the occasion, there was traditional song and dance from El Grupo Mexicano del Lehigh Valley, a Mexican cultural group that has existed for nearly 50 years. There was also a boxing demonstration from the Allentown Boxing Club, which plans to add youth boxing training for children in South Bethlehem at the Fowler center. Of course, there was also Mexican food.
