Bethlehem Celebrates Arbor Day

City honored as Tree City USA for the 18th time, mayor plants a red oak at skateplaza.

Mayor John Callahan and Tim Dugan, a forester for the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources planted a tree at the on Friday afternoon to celebrate Arbor Day.

Bethlehem has been honored for the 18th time as a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation, which also gave the city a "Growth Award."

In the last year, the City partnered with DCNR’s TreeVitalize program and  Lehigh Valley Community Public Radio, to plant 360 tree seedlings at Sand Island and Saucon Park.

Also last year, a dozen new street trees were installed within the Historic District as a cooperative effort of the Bethlehem Historic District Association and the City Department of Public Works. Eighteen declining trees were removed and replaced in the Downtown Business Area.

The city also celebrated by handing out free seedlings to residents at on Friday. The red oak at the SkatePlaza was donated by developer Lew Pektor and Jerry Reilly of Mid Hill Nursery in Hellertown.
