Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds Play Musikfest
Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds will play at Musikfest on Saturday, August 11 from 7:30pm-9:00pm on Northside Stage: The Morning Call Plaza Tropical.
Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds are a soulful-rock / rhythm & blues band out of Brooklyn, NY that has been touring extensively in support of their sophomore album Pound Of Dirt (hear tracks from the album: http://www.sistersparrow.com/music/). They are gaining momentum for their live shows, having already landed opening spots for Dr. John, The Black Keys, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Warren Haynes (among many others). Recently, they played 3 sets at Bonnaroo, a set at Summer Camp, a set at CBGB Festival, and SXSW with an upcoming set at Telluride Jazz Festival. In the fall they will join Allen Stone on tour and play Voodoo Music Festival.
Here is how the press has reacted so far to their album and live show:
"...frontwoman Arleigh Kincheloe has one of the biggest voices in the soul-funk business. Prepare to be blown away." - The Baltimore Sun
“They may be from Brooklyn, but the fiery brass- and gospel-infused funk emanating from Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds is rooted in Memphis soul. Their rhythmic wheelhouse combines big-city grit and down-home sweetness with a little bit of Americana twang.” – Los Angeles Times
“...rollicking blend of soul, funk and backwoods Americana rock ’n’ roll, which draws even indifferent hipsters onto the dance floor.” - New York Daily News
“Band On The Verge... the nine-person, horn-driven band prove that they can swagger as well as skank—and get bluesy and torchy when they need to.” – Relix
Jeff Miers, Pop Music Critic at The Buffalo News recently reviewed the band’s live experience during their opening slot for Fitz & The Tantrums, Miers called the band, "...a seriously funky collective capable of bringing elements of deep soul, New Orleans funk, Stax/Memphis stylings and earthy R&B together in a manner that makes the sentient mammal want to shake it..."
In comparing the two bands he said, "And as fantastic as Fitz & the Tantrums proved to be, I have to hand the gold medal to Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds. This band is one of the finest to have emerged over the past five years, and Arleigh Kincheloe is clearly a major star in waiting."
