A popular upscale restaurant in Bethlehem Township, has turned out to be another of Hurricane Irene’s casualties – at least temporarily. Three to four feet of water flooded the parking lot and basement of Blue Grillhouse and Wine Bar, 4431 Easton Ave., necessitating an extensive cleanup, which would have taken at least four weeks to complete. Today, owner George Paxos announced through a news release that he is going to take extra time and do a complete renovation of the restaurant and reopen in November. “I had planned on doing a complete renovation for awhile, but the water damage from …
PPL Electric Utilities is asking its customers who are still without power to call or use its Internet reporting system to again report their power outages. The utility can be called toll free at 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775). “This will help ensure that we know about all remaining trouble and will help us more accurately set remaining restoration estimates,” the utility says on its Website. As of this afternoon, PPL is reporting that 23,000 of its customers – out of 350,000 who were initially affected – still do not have electricity. Nearly 2,000 of the remaining affected customers are in …
On it’s home page, PPL Electric Utilities says that it had technical difficulties with its power outage reporting systems beginning Sunday, which may have prevented some customers from reporting their loss of electricity. If you do have an outage that has not been reported, PPL asks that you report outages online or by calling 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775). “Calls from customers help us determine the scope of outages and better direct crews to where the problems exist,” the Web site says. The utility company asks those who have already reported the electricity loss not call again for an …
Once the clouds parted early Sunday evening, revealing sunlight for the first time in nearly two days, Bethlehem was finally able to sing Good Night, Irene. But the city and the rest of the Lehigh Valley may be feeling the storm’s effects for days. Power outages continued late into Sunday night and may go on. Some city roads remained closed because of flooding. Uprooted trees damaged at least one home. But the inconveniences aren't all bad -- if you're a kid, anyway. Bethlehem Area school children get an extra day of summer vacation. No classes today. As of late Sunday night, PPL Electric …
Illick's Mill Park was overwhelmed by the overflowing Monocacy Creek this morning. Downstream, at Mauch Chuch Road and Elizabeth Avenue, the creek turned business parking lots into lakes. Predictably, the Colonial Industrial Quarter also was not spared.
The Monocacy Creek overtopped its banks, flooding Bethlehem's historic Colonial Industrial quarter on Sunday. Water spilled over roads, railroad tracks and even a few cars.
Less than two weeks removed from a Musikfest upended by rain and flood, ArtsQuest has been forced to close the Banana Factory and the SteelStacks campus on Sunday because of the anticipated effects of Hurricane Irene, according to a release issued by the nonprofit arts organization. ArtsQuest has also shortened its schedule of events on Saturday in anticipation of the storm. That means that free concerts planned at the Levitt Pavilion on Sunday – Moona Luna at 5 p.m. and HuDost at 7:30 p.m. – have been cancelled. Also cancelled is the Saturday night Musikfest Café concert featuring Mr. Ho’s …

Hurricane Irene is expected to bring heavy rain and winds gusting up to 60 mph to Bethlehem Saturday night into Sunday. More rain dousing our already saturated ground could cause downed trees and power outages. The Red Cross and PPL Electric Utilities advise residents to have a storm kit handy. First-aid kit and enough prescription medicines. Flashlight with fresh batteries. Battery-operated radio…
