Northampton Community College, the City of Bethlehem Recreation Department and Homebase Skateshop have announced they will jointly sponsor a free skateboard camp for boys and girls living in the Southside neighborhood of the city, begining Monday, June 18.
The camp will be held at the Bethlehem Skateplaza, located at Steel Avenue and East Fourth Street.
Little or no skateboarding experience is necessary to enjoy the instructional camp, and equipment will be provided by the skateboard shop.
This course will start on flat land and build on the basics, including skateboard orientation, safety, stretching, bailing out and falling, knee sliding, tick tack maneuvers and navigating the skatepark.
Students will learn the 10 rules of skatepark etiquette and safety and be taught to understand skatepark traffic and flow.
As skateboarders master the fundamentals--pushing, turning, pumping for speed and balance, and control of their board on flat land, the course will introduce a few basic maneuvers for the skatepark including pumping and carving transitions and the ollie.
The camp will run Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon. Two sessions will be offered:
- June 18 to 22
- July 9 to 13
Participants must submit a liability waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Space is limited.
