Update: Driver in Fatal Stefko Crash is Identified

Driver in one-vehicle crash on Stefko Boulevard was dead at the scene, passenger hospitalized, police say.

One person was killed and another injured in a one-vehicle crash in front of the Just Born candy company on Stefko Boulevard Saturday night, Bethlehem police said.

The driver was dead at the scene, police said. A passenger, who also was not identified, was taken to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill with “unknown injuries,” police said.

The Northampton County Coroner's Office has identified the person killed as Dwayne A. Hackett, 42, of Indianapolis, Indiana, according to a Morning Call report. The death was ruled an accident.

Coroner Zachary Lysek said speed was a factor in the crash. He is awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

The crash occurred about 6:30 p.m. and forced police to close Stefko Boulevard between Washington Avenue and Radclyffe Street to clear the scene and to allow police accident reconstruction experts to investigate.

“At this time, speed appears to have been a factor in the crash,” police wrote in a blog post on the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it is asked to call Officer Jonathan Desiderio at 610-865-7187, police said.

Sadly, there have been other fatalities in that area of Stefko Blvd. I remember a motorcyclist being killed near the Walters Street intersection when I was a kid.

This is about as straight a piece of road as can be with good sight lines in that area. Sounds like the driver was indeed speeding (common on this stretch since it is an inviting straightaway) and just veered into a side of the road obstacle.

Dwayne was my cousin. I've been trying find more news about the accident....or the cause, though it is looking like speed was indeed, the reason for the crash. Just trying to make sense of it all, here in Indianapolis

Monty Jey, Dwayne was driving the car of a friend of mine named John. The car was recently purchased and was a very fast V8 Mustang. I rode in that car just the week before. The car handled unbelievably well so I hate to say it but the only way to lose it was if he was driving extremely fast. The passenger is also a friend of mine and she spent a week in the hospital and is lucky to be alive. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Dwayne was a very nice guy.
