Mom Sentenced for Trying to Pull Son's Arms Off

Chelsie Grant, 19, of Lower Milford, was sentenced in Lehigh County Court to 1 to 2 years in prison for abuse of her 6-month-old son.

A Lehigh County judge sentenced a Lower Milford woman Friday to one to two years in prison and 18 years' probation for abusing her 6-month-old son earlier this year.

Chelsie Grant, 19, who pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault, faced 10 to 20 years in prison under sentencing guidelines. Her guity plea and other mitigating circumstances, including her low intelligence, mental health and remorse, contributed to the short jail sentence, Judge James T. Anthony said.

"It's a very serious crime you committed," Anthony said. "You are obviously not capable of raising a child."

Anthony criticized the adults in her family for not contacting Lehigh County Children and Youth earlier.

The child's paternal grandmother, who has custody of the boy, now 16 months old, and his 6-month-old sister who was born in prison, gasped as the sentence was read. Assistant District Attorney Anna-Kristie Marks declined to comment.

"I think the judge did the right thing," said Carol Marciano, Grant's attorney. "Chelsie is not evil. She's very troubled and [the judge] took into consideration all the mitigating circumstances."

Marciano said Grant, who is eligible for parole in a year, might never be granted custody of her children.

Grant was arrested in February for systematic abuse of her 6-month old son, including:

  • Twisting and breaking the baby's arms
  • Choking him
  • Shoving objects into his throat

Grant, who waived her preliminary hearing in late February, pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of felony aggravated assault that can carry a sentence of a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 20 years. Grant originally was charged with one count of attempted homicide and two counts of felony aggravated assault.

According to the criminal complaint, Grant brought her son to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest on Jan. 12, claiming his father had abused the boy. Emergency room doctors confirmed the boy had several injuries, including a right elbow dislocation and fractures of both arms and legs.

Despite claiming at first that the boy's father caused the injuries, she later confessed to abusing her son. When confessing, Grant reenacted the abuse with a doll. The complaint says Grant "placed one hand on the child's chest and used the other hand to pull the arms of the child as far as she could several times in each direction. She then grabbed the ankles of the victim and twisted them in both directions and pushed both legs up toward the chest of the child and pulled them down forcefully several times."

She also admitted to shoving spoons and paper down the baby's throat.

This sentence is unbelievable! I am going to guess that this is a LIBERAL judge. Are you kidding me..."her low intelligence". Give me a break! What harm will her low intelligence cause in the future? Let's just keep making excuses for people's bad behavior. At what point are people held accountable or their actions?

No G a real mother would not let this person watch our kids, and enough of the pity her garbage, my kids knew how to treat our cats better than this 19 yr old treated her child, and we have had our cats since our youngest was 6.

As a matter of fact, Judge Anthony is a very Conservative Republican judge.

I agree with those who said she should be forced to undergo a procedure to ensure she cannot have any more children. I'd like to know more about the "mitigating circumstances" in this case. Sometimes prison hurts more than helps. I'll presume the judge knows the facts much better than I.

Person calling yourself G. You apparently don't have children cause if you did the only punishment you would feel is exceptable would be for her to rot in hell for torturing an innocent baby. May I ask what the hell is wrong with you for thinking that sentence was fare.

This makes me sick to my stomach along with all of the other sickening abusive crap out there! Children are the most innocent victims to these kinds of inexcusable acts and the fact that our laws and this judge are basically saying "oh go ahead you sick, messed up people, inflict pain amongst these defenseless children and watch them scream in pain, then come to court and we will not only allow you to live, but basically set you free". Yeah, what a great world in which we live....... DISGUSTING!

a joke!!!!

Did you think, however incredibly horrible & unthinkable this is, that families & friends are safe? "95% of all types of child abuse, even kidnapping, and selling them, comes from family & trusted friends." - Center for Missing & Exploited Children & U. S. Dept. of Justice. Having worked on psychiatric inpatient units, you don't want to hear the details. That's why all areas HAVE places like Lehigh County Children and Youth

I especially find it disgusting that the label of low intelligence can be used selectively whenever it is of advantage, especially in cases such as this. Can you imagine if this 19 year old were rejected from a job and the reason was low intelligence. It wouldn't stand! The violence done against the young child is pure evil. She should be mandated to be kept away from all children much as a convicted pedophilic must steer clear of any contact with children.

G, WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? I see that you are enamored with the copy and paste function!

Even wild animals know how to care for their young!!! Low intelligence could explain not feeding the child a proper diet or not bathing the child regularly. But abusing that poor baby like that is not acceptable or explained by her "Condition"!!!

G. Your only concern that they are saving taxpayers money!!!!! Really!!! She is a physco who belongs in a mental hospital and treated. Probation ! Oh yes that was a fair sentencing. That judge should be thrown off the bench. People get more time for processing pot. What was this judge thinking ? 18 years in prison is not enough!

@G...I am in agreement with everyone who believes this sentence is WAY too soft! As to your continued posting of her being closely watched for 18 years, how are they going to watch her every moment and are they going to sterilize her as well? If not, surely they won't be watching her when she is alone. If she does have access to these babies as she most likely will, who's going to protect them? Obviously the family didn't see any of this or chose to turn a blind eye to protect her, not the baby! There is NO way she should be able to be with those babies ever, and should not be able to conceive ever again! She lost those rights!

Just letting you all know, this is my cousin! And I grew up with her! But i didn't hear about these horrible crimes until she was already sent away... She has always been like this. She's a nasty human being. and the person calling yourself "G", you don't know her! She deserves far worse than that, and I'm her cousin saying this! I can't really say I'm surprised though... I never see her, but when I was informed she had a child, I prayed to God he'd be okay, or for her sake she grew some sanity in the decade I hadn't seen her... but it appears neither of those prayers were answered. She deserves to rot! Endlessly. and to now find out she had another child while in prison...... I don't even know what to say anymore about her.... But that she's a bad memory from my childhood and a bad image of my family.
If i could see her now.... God have mercy....
