Anti-Wall St. Rally Draws Angry Protesters

Organizer is a displaced bank teller trying to find work.

The Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City have inspired at least two similar groups in the Lehigh Valley.

Leading one of the local movements is Easton's Adam Santo, who says he brought the "Occupy Allentown" demonstration to that city Monday after being inspired by what was happening in New York.

Turnout "fluctuated" between 15-30 people throughout the afternoon, Santo said in a phone interview late Monday afternoon from the corner of 7th and Hamilton streets in Allentown. Cars could be heard in the background, honking, Santo said, in support.

Monday's protest drew a mix of people, Santo said, from the Lehigh Valley, from Reading, from Philadelphia. One person had been to the protests in New York City.

Some were angry about the government's bank bailouts. Others were environmentalists. Still more held Ron Paul's anti-Federal Reserve views. The key, he said, is that they're angry.

"If we didn't pay our mortgage, we'd be out on the street," he said.

But why weren't they angry three years ago, when the bailouts actually happened?

Santo said he thinks everything just came to a head.

"I think things are happening now because the financial situation has gotten so bad," he said. "People can't get jobs that pay. People have student loans they can't afford to pay off."

He's one of those people. A bank teller who lost his job after his bank merged with another, Santo got his CDL license but hasn't been able to find work as a truck driver.

Santo said he'll try to recruit more people from around the Lehigh Valley, although no events are planned for other communities.

"Occupy Allentown" is one of two local groups seemingly taking a page from what's happening in New York City. The other is known as "Occupy Bethlehem/Lehigh Valley." Santo said he hopes to join up with it at some point.

"These groups are just popping up everywhere," Santo said.

Here's a video report on the rally from WFMZ as well as video from The Morning Call.

I want to know who is funding these groups and what is the real purpose of these civil disobedience demonstrations.

the point is that it's a GUY FAWKES mask. History books in the library will clarify why, and if books are not your thing, then Watch V for Vendeta and you'll understand.

If it is jobs you want then you should be lobbying for a lower Corporate Tax Rate so that we are not an unattractive country to do business in.

No one is funding the Occupy protests, the Tea Party on the other hand, is funded by the Koch Brothers. The tax breaks have been tried and still 58,000 manufacturing facilities closed in the US from 2000 to 2008. President Reagan raised taxes on the wealthy 11 times. The shrinking middle class is getting angry about the 1% of the country controlling the economy. It's a Have & Have-nots situation, "Let them eat cake?"

I did not say tax breaks. They need to lower the rate over all to something fair and attractive. Say, 15% and eliminate the loopholes and tax breaks so all are contributing but it does not break anyone's back or keep their business from growing. %15 would put us in the bottom 10 and not the top three, where we are currently.

Also, the demands that unions have are a big reasons why facilities have closed or moved over seas. I know that was true with my dad's company.

Why does it take someone to fund... whether it's the Occupy crowd or the Tea Party? You certainly don't need to be funded to hang out on a street corner. And as for the Tea Party... I'm a member and I looked for the Koch money and couldn't find a cent. Whenever we do something at the LVTP we ask for member donations plus we have fund raisers. Just exactly what are we doing that requires billionaire financing?

If you Really want to know more take a read at the link below. This is a more accurate reason as to the purpose of Civil Disobedience. I think most can agree that we are tired of the way things have been run in this country and REAL change has to happen. http://nycga.cc/2011/09/30/declaration-of-the-occupation-of-new-york-city/

Who cares? I sure don't...let them gather. It is a constitutional right and I am choosing not to hear or participate in their message.

Capitalism without a conscience is capitalism gone bad.

The deletion of the words "personnel department" with the words "human resources" is symptomatic of the dehumanization of individuals by corporations. Resources are things that are used up, like iron ore. The words "human resources" make me think of a process of "using up people and discarding them." We are not inanimate objects to be "burned up" in a corporate meat grinder.

There are too many Ebenezer Scrooge types. We need more reformed Scrooges. Why was A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens so popular and WHY IS IT STILL SO POPULAR TODAY? The answer is brutally obvious to those of us who have been sacrificed because of corporate greed and mismanagement.

I had a boss named Bob and a supervisor named Stan who would rip themselves apart trying to maintain employee job security and customer satisfaction. They were both driven out because of corporate greed. Eventually, it got to me.

A corporation is a thing. We little people who work for it, or used to, are alive. We have souls, we have families with souls who need us. The corporate leaders who have lost theirs should get them back before they destroy the heart of America.

That's all I have to say today.

Among the many surreal aspect of these wind-up-toy surrogates for the labor unions, Marxists, unionists and Democrat politicians and their "occupation" of Wall Street is just how ridiculously selective and hypocritical their outrage is. We all can recall when the left and their minions in the media where out to demonize Bush and his administration, we had all sorts of "peace" protests. We had marches, Hollywood movies, Political Cartoons, Doonesbury strips, and letters to the editor galore against Guantanamo Bay, Abu Graib, Afghanistan, Iraq, renditions, wiretaps, you name it. It was a 24/7 hate fest directed at Bush, Rumsfeld, and Cheney ostensibly over government intervention and maliciousness. We had Cindy Sheehan and Camp Casey. The Dixie Chicks trashing America. The assassination movie about Bush. MoveOn.org placing an ad in the New York Slimes calling General David Patraus "General Betrayus". The list is endless and it went on for 8 years. Isn't it interesting now how we don't hear jack-squat about Obama sending an additional 40,000 troops to Afghanistan, our military intervention in Libya, predator drones killing hundreds or thousands, the continued operation of Gitmo, the continuation of virtually every Bush era tactic for fighting the war on terror, or this week, the Holder Justice Department's secret memo allowing for the assassination of U.S. citizens on foreign soil with no habeas corpus. Where is Cindy Sheehan these days anyway?

(continued) Why doesn't CBS, NBC, ABC, or any of the other left wing news outlets have a microphone in her face anymore? Why aren’t Jodie Evans and Code Pink getting in Hillary Clinton's face with blood painted hands the way they did to Condi Rice? The reason is simply. The left doesn't really care about ANY of these issues just like the left really doesn't care about the middle class, Wall Street, the banks or anything else that they feign outrage about. The only thing the left REALLY cares about is winning elections and political power. These protests are pure political theater and these protestors, whether they are smart enough to know it or not, are just sock puppets for George Soros and the liberal elites in this country. Guy Fawkes indeed. The clown with the mask on simply wants Obama re-elected and this is just part of David Axelrod’s campaign strategy. Sorry to sound so cynical, but if I’m wrong, then why is virtually everything the left whined about under Bush now ignored? Why aren’t these protestors “occupying” the sidewalks outside of the Whitehouse? Its political theater and nothing more.

They really really need to teach Civics in our schools. Ignorance over how our economy works is really widespread. It even extends to the White House!

It's unfair to label all the protesters as Communists. More damage has been done to our nation from right wing pundits than Kruschev could have imagined. Divide & conquer, demonize the other side, deny their right to express an opinion, cloud the issues and preserve the Status Quo. The Occupy movement is questioning the system, they don't have a set list of demands, no one person speaks for this group.
These people are, the foreclosed homeless, the uninsured, the outsourced workers, kids stuck with huge student loans. These are our brothers, sisters friends and neighbors. As long as special interests conspire to make middle America pay for their greed, I believe this movement will continue.

DavidK, they do have a list of demands. 13 ridicules, unattainable ones, as posted above. And please provide some facts to back up your claims about the right ring pundits causing more harm to this nation and denying people's right to express an opinion. It is the left labeling everyone who disagrees with their point of view "RACIST" and shutting dissenting opinion down in that way.

DavidK...do you include big labor in your condemnation of "special interests"? Have President Obama and the Democrats been using a "divide and conquer" strategy? Should the "foreclosed homeless" also point a finger at the government forced end of redlining, the Community Reinvestments Act, the implied guarantees and bloated balance sheets of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the corruption of Frankin Raines, Barney Frank, and Chris Dodd and the profligate ways of the Fed when they lament their plight or the current state of the real estate market? Does the left "demonize the other side"? Does the left attempt to deny the right's 1st amendment rights? Does academia share in the blame for a student's huge loans? This is not a "movement". This is an astroturfed, staged side-show paid for by your own special interests and a Whitehouse desperate to be re-elected. These "protestors" are simply attempting to get Obama re-elected, as is the media.

Amazing how they protest Wall Street who gives most of their money to elect DEMOCRATS! Maybe all those protesters should start looking for a new party to join!

MSNBC had a guest saying this was born from the Tea Party movement. That it is left over energy from those gatherings. Not sure if I believe that, but it is an interesting idea.

The demonstrations are neither funded by either George Soros nor US Chamber of Commerce. Put canned talking points aside. Special interests DOMINATE our political and economic system - undemocratic, promote the unique interest of a rich corporation via million dollar lobbyist, and make TRUE COMPETITION AND DEMOCRACY IMPOSSIBLE because they pay good, hard money to GET A COMPETITIVE EDGE over their smaller, less well-heeled competitors. Do small, local businesses have jets? Do small, local construction companies get direct subsidies for their construction projects? Do small, local farmers get subsidies to use public lands or equipment at low cost or do they have to pay for the land they use? Do small, local apparel businesses get government subsidies so they can get their products cheaper? Can small, local banks sell your personal information (including social security numbers)to big, national telemaketers for a profit (and you can't opt out). Can small, local factories get away with foisting the cost of air and water pollution cleanups on the MIDDLE CLASS TAXPAYER? Can a small, local company get a tax break by hiring employees overseas? But we all know that the biggest corporations, the ones that pay well heeled lobbyists and public relations firms millions and congressmen thousands in order to get TENS OF BILLIONS WORTH OF TAX BREAKS THAT THE OVERWORKED MIDDLE CLASS HAS TO PAY FOR...AND PAY FOR...AND PAY FOR, GET ALL THESE THINGS. We just get numb to it after a while.

If they were petitioning in favor of restrictions on or tariffs on Chinese good I would be in favor. They are panhandling for laundry, medical and metal health services whilest they protest the "system" the supplied those services. Like we used to say to the Hippies of the 60's "Get a job, get a haircut!"

They have no real goals. They do not know how dangerous these gatherings can be. It won't take much for these to go real bad real quick. Now the Unions are joining? never a good thing.

I see the same people over and over again, >>>>>*****SHOUTING!!!!!*****<<<<< to make non-existent points over and over again. I don't know if it's a lack of confidence or both. But there is a forum for shoulting and this isn't one of them. Try to string together reasoned arguments instead of just repeating the talking points over and over again, or making blanket rants with nothing to back them up. The histrionics by these repetitive commenters is very annoying and very disappointing. Try to make a reasoned argument why I should listen to you - PLEASE???

These idiots fail to realize the banks paid back their bailout money and the US Govt profited. If banks and banking are part of the argument wasnt it Barney, Fannie, Freddie that gave loans to people who had no business getting them?
