5 Things to do This (Football Free) Weekend

Rock 'n' Roll, restaurants or might we suggest a day trip to New Hope?

So you say you’ve got no football to watch and nothing to do this weekend. Oh, the Pro Bowl, you say? Are you really going to build your weekend around that?

We’ve got a few suggestions.

Go to New Hope.

The Lambertville-New Hope Winter Festival continues today with a wide array of activities to amuse the whole family. And while a few of the events are ticketed, many of the activities, including puppet shows, ice sculpting, theater performances and walking tours, are actually free. The fun continues through Sunday afternoon.

Visit the editor’s favorite live music listening room.

Godfrey Daniels founder Dave Fry returns home on Saturday night to perform traditional and contemporary folk music. From the club website: “Dave’s concerts feature both traditional and contemporary folk music, spliced together with guitar, mandolin, banjo, wry and spontaneous commentary on American family life, and plenty of participation on everyone’s part. Dave is unique in his ability to entertain all ages.” The fun starts at 8 p.m.

Get your church on.

The Essence of Joy Gospel choir from Penn State University under the direction of Tony Leach, performs at the 11 am. service at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 2540 Center St., Bethlehem.

Eat a great meal.

Bethlehem Restaurant Week kicks off on Sunday with more than two dozen establishments to choose from to have a multi-course lunch or dinner for one fixed price. Lunch prices range from $10 to $20 depending on the restaurant. Dinner comes as cheap as $10 at Hello Burrito, but is no more expensive than $30 anywhere else.

Go here to see a complete list of participating restaurants. The editor has been to about a dozen of these establishments himself, and recommends them all. But if you haven’t tried Cactus Blue yet, you really ought to.

Listen to the county executive’s rock n’ roll band.

Don Cunningham and the Cabinet, which in addition to the Lehigh County Executive/lead singer/guitarist, also features lead guitarist/assistant Bethlehem Township Manager Doug Bruce, plays the Molten Lounge at the Sands Bethlehem Casino Resort, beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday.

If you go early, four of the casino’s eateries are participating in restaurant week, plus the casino is giving away a new 2011 Buick Lacrosse at 7 p.m. to one lucky visitor. There are definitely worse ways to spend a Sunday evening.

Whatever you do, have a great weekend.
