The Bethlehem Police Department Runner’s Club raised $5,000 for the Robert Lasso Memorial Fund through its 5K run in April and presented those funds to the slain Freemansburg police officer’s widow on Tuesday.
The fund was set up to help Lasso’s children.
More than 300 runners participated in the event on April 21.
Officer Michael Ogrodnick told Jennifer Lasso that the runner's Club decided to do this, "because it was the right thing to do," according to the Bethlehem Police Blog.
Ogrodnick received support and assistance from Officers Timothy Cooper, Jim Freed, Al Strydesky, Kelly Walbert, Dwight Schaffner, Michelle Dologite, Doug Nothstein and Ben Hackett.
Lasso, 31, was slain on Aug. 11 responding to a disturbance at 126 Washington St. in Freemansburg.
Jury selection for the capital-murder trial of Lasso’s accused killer, George Hitcho, is under way. Testimony is slated to begin Monday, according to The Morning Call.
