IESI Bethlehem Landfill Offering $10,000 in Scholarships to Local Students

IESI Bethlehem Landfill is offering ten $1,000 scholarships to local graduating high school students who have been accepted to an environmental science or engineering program.

The scholarships will be available to students in the following high schools: Liberty, Saucon Valley, Freedom and Southern Lehigh.

Applications can be picked up by students attending the above schools at their guidance offices. The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2013, and winners will be announced this summer.

2013 marks the twelfth year that IESI has offered scholarships to local students.

“IESI is committed to our partnership with the community as well as seeing young people pursue the fields of environmental science and engineering, and our scholarship initiative is an exciting way to be involved,” said IESI's Samuel Donato. “The cost of a higher education can place a heavy toll on families, and our goal is to make the pursuit of a quality education an obtainable one for these gifted students.”

IESI’s scholarship program is one of several community outreach programs implemented by the Lower Saucon-based business.

Does anyone else think this is a joke. This company is worth Billions of dollars and them giving out a scholarship for $1K is like Bill gates giving out a penny to someone. I know they don't have to do anything, but I don't see the point. A grand won't even buy the books.
